The Best 7 Dog Walking Spots in Auckland
Our favourite furry friends deserve the best that we can provide, the very best food, shelter, toys, and of course, walking locations. While Auckland has an abundance of dog-friendly parks and reserves, a pup parent must also consider uneven terrains, accessibility, and on-leash/off-leash conditions. We’ve located seven of the best places to walk your fur baby in Auckland – and have even received the tick of approval from our Chief Product Tester, Leo.
Churchill Park, Glendowie
This urban farmland located in Glendowie has the bonus of cattle and large open spaces. The park is mostly used by off-leash dogs as the mixed terrain allows your dog to sprint around at high speeds and go nuts! There’s also plenty of Pine Trees, making for the perfect rest spot after a fun game of fetch. The farm-like atmosphere makes you forget that you’re still in Auckland, while the stunning views make those doggo walks an even better time!
Waiata Reserve, Remuera
Hidden away in the heart of Remuera Village lies the beautiful and peaceful Waiata Reserve. This location has the benefit of a formed pathway, making walks for you and your pup accessible at any time of the year. The sloping hills and greenery allow for the best off-leash opportunities, while the nearby shops and cafes make for a fun day out with your furry friend! There’s also the opportunity to interact and socialise with other pups and their parents as this spot is well populated.
Orakei Basin
Orakei Basin is a serene walkway with gorgeous views of the Auckland city skyline. The basin features an off-leash area dedicated to dog exercise, so there is plenty of space for your dog to burn off energy and work up an appetite for dinner! The trail also allows you to walk, run, and cycle with your pup in tow, and the stunning sunsets make this a worthy location on our list. The Basin is a well populated spot, especially in the weekends, with dog owners and fitness junkies alike – so be wary if your dog isn’t used to fellow pups or people!
Big King Reserve, Three Kings
Another one of our favourites – Big King Reserve! This park is a lovely walk to do with the family, with vast open spaces for off-leash adventures and games of fetch. The path is mostly flat, but there is a set of stairs further along the trail that can be avoided by looping back the way you came. The location makes it a favourite among locals, so you can be sure to run into fellow furry friends and their humans at some point on your walk. Big King provides the bonus of drink stations and dog water bowls by the park access point – perfect for those scorching hot days!
Craigavon Park, Blockhouse Bay
Located in West Auckland, Craigavon Park is a fun mixture of a dog park, playground, and fitness centre. Craigavon not only provides a break from the hustle and bustle of life, but also offers a space for you and your pup to exercise together. Make sure to check out the amazing set up of obstacles in the dog area for your furry friend to play off-leash! There’s also plenty of picnic tables scattered throughout the park – the perfect chance for a family picnic.
Waiatarua Reserve, Remuera
Another one of the best spots in Auckland is the Waiatarua Reserve located in Remuera. What makes this walking spot so special is that it runs around NZ’s biggest water restoration project, providing spectacular views of the wetlands. The reserve also has a dedicated dog walking area, allowing your pup to roam around off-leash and splash around in the mud during the Winter months. Waiatarua features an impressive bird life – with several bird viewing lookouts found off the main path. The path is mostly flat and gravel, making it highly accessible and ensures your dog will have zero troubles and mega fun!
Kakamatua Inlet
We’ve saved the best for last! Auckland has a variety of dog-friendly beaches, but the Kakamatua Inlet is among the best of the best. The wide-open sandy spaces let your dog have fun under the sun while the freshwater stream makes it easy to hydrate. Not all dogs fancy open bodies of water, but the serene calmness of Kakamatua provides the perfect opportunity for dog swimming. The gorgeous views and soft sand make it one of Leo’s favourite Summer spots!
